In general, they are an acrylic resin that cures rapidly in the presence of water (to be precise, of hydroxide ions), forming long sturdy chains that join the joined surfaces.

Cyanoacrylates are sensitive to moisture. Excessive exposure to moisture can reduce their shelf life. Since the presence of humidity causes the glue to settle, exposure to normal levels of humidity in the air causes the formation of a light film within a few seconds which considerably slows down the reactive crosslinking process.

For this reason, cyanoacrylate must be applied in a thin layer to ensure that the reaction proceeds quickly and that a strong bond is formed in a reasonable time.
